What is ISO 9001?
What is ISO 9001? ISO 9001 is an International Standard that is used worldwide by over one million organisations to provide best practice requirements for an effective Quality Management System (QMS). ISO 9001 helps organisations to ensure they are meeting the needs of their customers and other stakeholders as well as ensuring compliance with requirements that relate to a product or service.
ISO 9001 is actually one of three quality management standards that can be used together to build a robust quality management system. The series also includes ISO 9000, which introduces the standard, and ISO 9004:2009, which outlines requirements for sustained success through quality management. All three standards are based on eight quality management principles – Leadership; management; involvement of people at all levels; process approach; continual improvement; decision making; supplier relationships and customer focus.
ISO 9001 recognises that:
Establishing a quality management system should be a strategic decision and the development of the system will be influenced by:
- Business environment and associated risks or changes
- Varying needs
- Particular objectives
- Products or services offered
- Size and organizational structure
The scope or purpose of ISO 9001 is:
To specify the requirements for a quality management system where an organisation:
- Is required to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide a product or service that meets the customer’s requirements.
- Sets a goal to enhance customer satisfaction through the effective application of the system, including processes for continual improvement .

What is a Quality Management System?
A quality management system enables a business to run more efficiently and profitably by providing a way to organise its people, resources and processes to achieve the goals of the organisation. A quality management system can benefit organisations of all sizes however for new start-ups and smaller organisations, implementing a quality management system can be quite challenging. How quickly and efficiently a quality management system can be established within a business depends on the experience and capability of the founders of a company as well as the resources available to them.
What is ISO 9001 Used For?
Evidence has shown that ISO 9001 helps small businesses to develop and grow by maximising the value of the business concept and providing a framework that ensures all legal requirements are met. ISO 9001 establishes a customer focus to ensure customer satisfaction and designing an effective quality management system and processes will help a business to consistently meet their requirements whilst also ensuring that processes are reviewed and continually improved.
The Eight Quality Principles
IS0 9001 is built on eight strong management principles. If these principles are adopted by a business they will provide support and establish internal processes to manage the organisation through periods of change and growth. The table below shows the benefits of each quality principle.
ISO 9001 Quality Principle
Benefit To The Organisation
People will understand and be motivated by meeting the common goals and objectives of the organisation.
Allows management to focus their efforts on the key processes within the organisation.
Involvement of People
This will improve motivation and commitment within the organisation as people show enthusiasm to be involved in and contribute to the continual improvement of the business.
Improves the effective use of resources resulting in lower costs and shorter cycle times and will provide consistent and predictable results.
Provides an advantage in performance by improving the organisations capabilities and allowing the business to react quickly to opportunities.
Improves the ability for key personnel to make informed decisions through increased ability to review, challenge and change opinions and decisions.
Creates value for both parties through the speed of responses and optimisation of costs and resources.
This will increase the effectiveness in the use of resources to improve customer satisfaction. Customer loyalty will increase, leading to repeat business and increased revenue and market share.
Making ISO 9001 a Success
The theory behind ISO 9001 is that quality is achieved through developing and improving activities and behaviour within an organisation. ISO 9001’s system principles and approach can be used throughout the business as a framework for managing all of the organisations standards, legal obligations and customer contract requirements. As new approaches or requirements are established they can be easily integrated into an existing system and this will support business growth and development.
